Weekly Coding Classes for Ages 6 - 12

Registrations will be grouped into three separate age groups, unless otherwise requested by parents: 6-7, 8-9, and 10-12.

 

Coding with MIT Scratch 3.0 

Locations (Calgary, Alberta):

- Scenic Acres Community Center
- Silver Springs Community Center,
- Cochrane Community Center.

Call to Register:

  The class is following a comprehensive how-to visual series. The following four workbooks will be used.
 
   

Time, Duration, Start Dates and Location:

Classes are held once weekly. The duration is one hour.

The course begins the week of January 14, 2019.

The course runs for a total of 12 sessions. Classes are not held during statuatory holidays.

 

Start time:

  • Mondays 5-6 PM, or
  • Mondays  6-7 PM, or
  • Tuesdays 5-6 PM, or
  • Tuesdays 6-7 PM.

Location:

  • Scenic Acres Community Center, and/or
  • Silver Springs Community Center, and/or
  • Cochrane Community Center.

The location chosen depends on registration preferences, class sizes and availability of rooms.

 

BYOL:

Students must bring their own laptop. We recommend installing Chrome as a browser, if not we can help the student do so in class.

 

 

 

Prerequisites:

- students must be able to read enough to make coding work,

- basic use of keyboard and mouse is expected,

- basic use of an Internet Browser, although a number of TA-s will assist as needed.

 

Parented/Unparented:

Parents are welcome to stay if they wish to, however it is not required.

Caveat: siblings not enrolled in the program cannot attend the class.

There is no eating during the coding class and no liquids will be allowed in the vicinity of computers.

Our team cannot be held liable for damage caused to computer during class as a result of eating, drinking or general handling of devices such as throwing, dropping, etc.

 

Course Goal:

- Acquiring age appropriate computer proficiency and an introduction to coding concepts.

- Improving problem solving, focus and strengthening thinking in a fun way.

- Introduction to video game coding.

- A few minutes breaks will be included to allow students to get to know each other and socialize.

 

Class Size:

Maximum class size is 20 students, typically less, depending on the venue chosen.

 

Cost per Session:

$24/hour per student per session, not including materials. Materials are extra (see below).

Billing occurs 4 sessions at a time, i.e. $96 monthly x 3 times (Jan, Feb, March).

This means 3 billing periods are scheduled per course as it progresses over time.

Payment methods: post dated cheques or reocurring credit card payments are scheduled.

The material cost and first 4 sessions are paid together prior to the start of the course.

 

Materials Cost:

Materials cost is not refundable, ordered copies cannot be unprinted. If you are no longer able to attend the course, you can cancel the cost of the class, and you get to keep any purchased workbooks.

Included:

- four workbooks (as shown on the right),

- student notebooks,

- classroom sheets and forms,

- manipulatives.

 
   

 

There are two options: purchase or rent. The cost is applied one time only.

 

1. Purchased materials: $65.00 CAD per student, one time (reduced price, instead of the published prices + shipping).

Students must have the workbooks during each class, and get to keep them at the end of the course.

OR

2. Rented workbooks are for classroom use only: $40 CAD per student, one time. Students do not keep or take the books home when renting.
