Geometry Manupulatives and Construction Exercises |
|||||
Why are construction exercises so important?
Much of geometry has evolved in ancient times, for example by Greek Mathematicians, in an attempt to determine methods for architecture and figure out the spacial relationship between shapes, angles and edges. Construction exercises were used before the existence of computers and CAD software to accurately build bisectors, medians, etc. Many classic versions of such building algorithms exist and are still used today by architects in technical drawings. The two tools used typically for these are the ruler and the compass. Check out the following animations of many classic construction algorithms: https://www.mathsisfun.com/geometry/constructions.html Suggestion for teachers: Geometry and philosophy used to go hand in hand. Select a simple construction demo in the above link. After students watch the animation for that method, have them discuss why they think it accomplishes the goal of that construction. This will evolve an intuition for geometry and help remember basic axioms. |
